🍀 Lucky to become successful · The Bunker #70

In the realm of UX/UI design, as well as in many other fields, success is often attributed to a blend of factors - raw talent, dedication, right timing, and yes, a significant element of luck.

In the realm of UX/UI design, as well as in many other fields, success is often attributed to a blend of factors - raw talent, dedication, right timing, and yes, a significant element of luck. But have you ever stopped to ponder what luck really is, and how vital a role it plays in our journey to success?

Contrary to popular belief, luck isn't just about being at the right place at the right time. It's about being prepared for opportunities when they come knocking at your door.

It requires a constant commitment to learning, improving, and putting yourself in situations where opportunities are likely to arise, so that when those serendipitous moments of "luck" do appear, you're primed and ready to seize them.

This doesn't suggest that you should lean solely on luck to fuel your success. Far from it.

Rather, it's about acknowledging that luck can indeed play a part in your achievements, and making sure that you're doing everything within your power to tilt the odds of it falling in your favor.

So, you may wonder, how can you "increase your luck" as a UX/UI designer? The journey begins with hard work and unwavering dedication. The more effort and energy you pour into your craft, the more you stand to gain from it.

This translates into refining your skills to perfection, staying abreast of industry trends, and continually seeking out new learning opportunities to broaden your horizons.

Proactivity

Next in line is proactivity. Don't sit around waiting for opportunities to land in your lap - you have to chase them. Because if you don't, they won't appear.

This is like having a partner; many say, "Don't look for it, it will end up appearing when you're not looking for it."

We all know this is relative; you have to be actively searching to be attentive to opportunities, and you have to work on it. It can be going to the gym to be in good physical shape for when you meet your future partner, going to therapy to feel psychologically well, and so on.

In design, this could involve reaching out to potential clients, making your presence felt at industry events, or even taking the initiative to start your own projects.

In my case, I started several projects at once:

  • Instagram
  • YouTube
  • Koala UI
  • Webflow Templates
  • Newsletter

These projects simply increase the chances of attracting clients because I am exposing myself more frequently.

Remember that opportunities are often created, not simply stumbled upon. And you must understand this if you want to progress in life.

Many people get stuck for this very reason; they simply wait for opportunities to appear, but you have to move.

Have faith in yourself and your abilities, and never let the fear of failure deter you from trying.

After all, every setback is a stepping stone to success, a learning opportunity that brings you one step closer to your next big break.

And when you feel low on motivation, remember that airplanes take off when the wind blows strongly against them, not in favor of them.

While luck can indeed play a role in success, it's far from being the sole determinant.

Hard work, resilience, and a positive attitude are just as important, if not more. So keep striving, stay optimistic, and seize every opportunity that comes your way. Who knows? Your biggest "lucky break" may be just round the corner, waiting for you to discover it. But you'll need to be prepared for when that opportunity comes. If you wait for everything to fall from the sky, the opportunity will come and you won't know what to do.

It's all about actively participating in your own success story, making the most of the opportunities that come your way, and always striving to learn and improve.

As the saying goes, "Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity."

Or in other words, luck can be considered as an equation between preparation and opportunity.

So keep preparing, keep seeking out opportunities, and who knows? You just might find yourself becoming "luckier" than you ever imagined.

Talent or Work?

Personally, I believe in both.

According to Cristiano Ronaldo, "talent without work is nothing."

Messi is good, but he wouldn't be the best in the world if he didn't train every day.

It's obvious that some things can be more innate, like perhaps creativity, but everything is trainable; it just arrives earlier for some and later for others.

There are children who create super creative drawings at the age of 3, and there are others who need 20 years of practice to do it perfectly.

It depends on how much you desire it and how much you're willing to sacrifice.

In my case, I consider myself not very creative and a very technical and disciplined person. That's why I leverage my skills, and if I am a technical and disciplined person, I will start working from minute 1, increasing the chances of success in everything I do to maximize luck.

In my case, I require a lot of work and effort to achieve anything, and that's the nature I've been dealt with. But since I am who I am and accept how I am, all that's left is to get to work.

Without effort, there is no reward; there are no shortcuts in life, and everything has to be long-term.

This doesn't mean success = suffering, and sacrifice is not = suffering. You have to find the balance, and as it's a marathon, not a sprint, it's better to optimize for the long run and take things more calmly.

In conclusion, luck is a relevant factor, yes. But for this luck to appear:

  • You have to increase the chances of it appearing, and this only happens with work.
  • If you're not prepared for when the opportunity arises, it will be useless.
